Journey with Giovanny... the film

This film features 10 bilingual music videos about the life of my friend Giovanny Padilla Mojica and the ways our lives have intersected, including his spine-tingling migrant journey from Colombia to the US. I began writing these songs when my family moved to Colombia in 2008 to serve with Mennonite Central Committee. Giovanny was our doorman, and he opened my eyes to the daily reality of Colombians living outside the comfort of our gated apartment complex. I was so fascinated by Giovanny’s life story and the way it contrasted with mine that I began to write about it. When my family and I completed our service in Colombia and returned home, one of Giovanny’s poetic phrases proved true for us---distance separates but thoughts unite. We stayed in touch, and in 2022 Giovanny left Colombia for the US. Giovanny’s experiences during his migrant journey rekindled my writing about our intersecting lives. My writing evolved into song lyrics I began to play on the guitar. In the midst of this, as if by magic, I met Chilean singer-songwriter-producer Pedro Abriles, who had recently moved to Chattanooga. Pedro invited me into his studio and we began recording these songs, inspired by our daily updates from Giovanny as he traveled north. It was a dream come true when Giovanny finally arrived in Chattanooga. We spent the next 9 months filming these music videos about his life and mine. The deeper I’ve been drawn into this story, the more I’ve realized it’s about my journey as well. It’s about the roads we’ve chosen, the obstacles we’ve overcome, and the borders we’ve crossed to reach a new place we call home.   

Esta película presenta 10 videos de música sobre la vida de mi amigo Giovanny Padilla Mojica y las maneras en que nuestras vidas se han cruzado, incluyendo su viaje escalofriante de Colombia a los Estados Unidos. Empecé a escribir estas canciones cuando mi familia se mudó a Colombia en el año 2008 para servir con el Comité Central Menonita. Giovanny fue nuestro portero, y él me abrió los ojos a la realidad diaria de los Colombianos viviendo afuera de la comodidad de nuestro conjunto residencial. Yo estaba tan impresionado por el contraste entre la vida de Giovanny y la mía que empecé a escribir al respecto. Cuando mi familia y yo completamos nuestro servicio en Colombia y regresamos a casa, una de las frases poéticas de Giovanny nos resultó cierta---la distancia separa pero los pensamientos unen. Nos mantuvimos en contacto, y en el año 2022 Giovanny se fue de Colombia para los Estados Unidos. Las experiencias de Giovanny durante su viaje como inmigrante me inspiraron a continuar escribiendo sobre la cruzada de nuestras vidas. Mis escritos se volvieron letras de canciones que empecé a tocar en la guitarra. Como por arte de magia, conocí al cantautor y productor chileno Pedro Abriles, el cual había llegado recientemente a la ciudad de Chattanooga. Pedro me invitó a su estudio, y empezamos a grabar estas canciones, inspirados por las noticias diárias que recibimos de Giovanny en su camino al norte. Era un sueño hecho realidad cuando Giovanny finalmente llegó a Chattanooga. Pasamos los siguientes 9 meses grabando estos videos de música sobre su vida y la mía. Mientras más profundo me he involucrado en esta historia, más me doy cuenta que se trata de mi viaje también. Se trata de los caminos que hemos escogido, los obstáculos que hemos superado, y las fronteras que hemos cruzado para llegar a un nuevo lugar que llamamos hogar.
