I’ve always dabbled with poetry and songwriting, but it wasn’t until my 60th birthday that I first sang in public. I sang because I had a story to tell---the story of my friendship with a Colombian man named Giovanny, and his 3,000-mile journey to the US. I wrote a series of interrelated songs which became an album, and the album became the soundtrack for a film, Journey with Giovanny. We were able to tell this story so beautifully thanks to the creative collaboration of my friend and producer, Pedro Abriles. You can watch the film here.
After completing Journey with Giovanny, I asked Pedro to help me record a series of songs I had written decades ago. As we worked on this collection of songs, I realized several of them were about old girlfriends. They painted a portrait of my experience with romantic love, and this became the theme of the album. For anyone who is married, I don’t recommend recording songs about old flames, but if you do, be sure to include a few about your spouse, and make those the best songs. You can listen to my album Waterside here.
I am currently working on my third album, Angels. It is a series of songs dedicated to my loved ones and those most vulnerable in this world. I wrote one of these songs for a project called 80songsforpeace. You can hear my conversation and listen to the song, Calling Angels, here.
My book Stones from the Tumbler features 40 poems I compiled on my 40th birthday, and you can read them here.
My podcast, Consider the Lyrics, features my reflections on life through the lens of lyrics, and you can listen to it here.
